The Black Mercedes and the Magic of 1989: The Story Behind “Teenage Dreams”

Bangkok at the end of the eighties was a city humming with pure kinetic energy. For a teenager in their senior year at the International School Bangkok, the future felt vast, intoxicating, and completely unwritten. You are suspended right on the edge of adulthood, desperate to shed the awkward skin of your younger years and figure out who you actually want to be.

“Teenage Dreams” is the true story of that final school year in 1989, distilled into a blast of high energy electronic synth pop.

The Sound of 1989

Because this song is an authentic time capsule, the music could never have been an acoustic ballad or a polished modern pop track. It had to sound like it was recorded on reel to reel tape and pressed onto vinyl in 1989.

The production opens with bright, arpeggiated synthesizers bouncing over an upbeat drum machine and a driving bassline. Right from the opening bars, a robotic vocoder voice announces the year and the title, locking the listener straight into that golden era of dance pop.

The energy never lets up. The verses crackle with cheeky vocal chants, big synth hooks, and driving rhythms. It is designed to capture the exact feeling of rolling the windows down, cranking the stereo past the legal limit, and cruising down the expressway without a single worry in the world.

Unapologetically True, Unapologetically Cool

I will be the first to admit that the song is somewhat self indulgent. On paper, singing about sports cars, cheerleaders, and instant popularity sounds like pure teenage fantasy.

Except every single word of it is true.

I really did take the keys to my dad’s black Mercedes. It was a proper sports Mercedes, and driving that sleek machine through the school gates completely flipped my universe upside down. I really was playing in my own rock band. And yes, I really did end up dating a cheerleader.

At that age, after years of feeling quiet, nerdy, and invisible, stepping into that world was pure magic. It was genuinely cool, and for the first time in my life, I felt cool too.

Looking back from adulthood, society often tells us to play down our victories with polite modesty. We are supposed to laugh off our teenage highs as foolish or shallow. But why should we? When you are seventeen and you catch lightning in a bottle, it feels monumental. Why not celebrate the absolute joy of that season exactly as it happened?

“Driving dads car into my school felt like the man, it was so cool Mercedes car, made me a star we were a team with teenage dreams”

The sports Mercedes became more than transport; it was a partner in crime. It gave a shy kid the audacity to believe he was magnetic, confident, and ready to take on the world.

The Video: Superman in a Varsity Jacket

When it came time to create the music video, I did not want actors pretending to live in the eighties. The story needed real history.

I built the visual world using original archival photographs from 1989, featuring my high school, International School Bangkok, and genuine photos of myself from that senior year. Seeing those grain textured, authentic snapshots of the campus and our teenage crew immediately grounds the track in reality.

The pivotal visual moment in the video pays homage to classic superhero mythology.

We see the shy, everyday student caught in a moment of hesitation. Then, in an intentional nod to Clark Kent transforming into Superman, I do a sudden spin on camera. When the spin completes, the transformation is total. I am suddenly wearing my black ISB Varsity jacket and a pair of classic black Ray Ban Wayfarers.

Just like Superman pulling off his glasses to reveal the hero beneath, that black Varsity jacket and the Ray Bans became my uniform of reinvention. Along with the sports Mercedes keys, that jacket was the armour that allowed me to step out of the shadows and claim the person I wanted to become.

The Honest Bravado of Youth

There is a deliberate touch of humour in how unapologetic the lyrics and spoken outro are:

“You wanna be like me with a girl like her Get a Mercedes and be popular”

A luxury car does not make a man, and high school status is fleeting. Yet when you are living it, that illusion is your entire universe. That black sports Mercedes, the rock band, the girl on my arm, and that ISB jacket were real pieces of a real life. They provided the spark that pulled a shy boy out of his shell and gave him the confidence to dream bigger for the rest of his life.

“Teenage Dreams” is a celebration of that brief, glorious window of youth when the beat was infectious, the future was wide open, and having the keys in your hand made you feel like the king of Bangkok. If you like to listen please go here: https://youtu.be/nOXI55v1kYo
